John Furner is an American retail executive who serves as president and CEO of Walmart Inc. [WMT], one of the world's largest retailers. A longtime Walmart insider, Furner began with the company in 1993 as an hourly associate at Store 100 in Bentonville, Arkansas. Over more than three decades, he progressed through store operations, merchandising, sourcing and international management before reaching Walmart's top position. His assignments have included leadership roles at Sam's Club, Walmart China and Walmart U.S. Furner became CEO of Sam's Club U.S. in 2017 and president and CEO of Walmart U.S. in 2019. He succeeded Doug McMillon as Walmart Inc. CEO on February 1, 2026. Walmart describes Furner as a merchant, operator and innovator whose current priorities include technology and artificial intelligence-driven retail transformation.
Furner was born in 1974 in Jacksonville, Arkansas, and grew up in Arkansas. His father worked for Walmart for much of his career, giving Furner early exposure to the company.
